Every Monday, in a finance team somewhere, someone opens a spreadsheet and guesses.
How much to pre-fund this week. Which markets, which accounts, against payouts nobody can time yet. Guess low and a supplier is left waiting. Guess high and a few hundred thousand sits dead in a dozen accounts, earning nothing, while everyone waits for the next cycle to claw it back.
The polite word for this is forecasting. It is fortune-telling with a budget attached.
It made sense when payouts took days. It makes no sense now.
Over the past five years, more than 80 countries quietly rebuilt their domestic rails to run in real time. PIX in Brazil. UPI in India. SEPA Instant across the eurozone. FedNow and RTP in the United States. Faster Payments in the UK. Money that used to crawl for two to five days now lands in seconds, day or night, weekends included.
The rails changed. Most businesses did not notice. They still pre-fund against a forecast, still treat speed as something you pay extra for. Speed is not a premium feature anymore. It is the standard. At least at Magellan.
What exactly are instant payouts?
An instant payout settles in seconds on a real-time rail, available to the recipient the moment it lands, with confirmation back to you just as fast.
Three things have to be true. The instruction is checked and confirmed in seconds. The money moves between institutions with no hold and no pending limbo. And the rail never sleeps: nights, weekends, public holidays, all of it. Same-day batch does not count. "Faster than it used to be" is not the same as real time.
Most countries now run at least one rail that clears the bar: PIX (Brazil), UPI (India), SEPA Instant (EU), SPEI (Mexico), FedNow and RTP (US), Faster Payments (UK), plus mobile-money networks like M-Pesa where bank accounts are scarce. Each settles in seconds. Each was built by a central bank or a domestic scheme, for the local currency.
By bank, by card, by crypto
The rails above are mostly bank rails: money moving account to account inside a country. Two newer kinds of real-time rail sit alongside them. Cards and crypto.
Cards are interesting. You think of a card as the thing you tap to buy a coffee. It can run in reverse too: the coffee shop can push a refund straight back onto it. We call that "push-to-card", i.e. an instant payout over the card networks.
Crypto is the other one, and it is no longer a fringe story. Stablecoins like USDC and USDT settle in seconds, at any hour, in any reachable crypto wallet.
No rail wins everywhere, because the right rail is a question about the use case and the recipient on the other end.
A consumer has a card in their pocket and no idea what their bank details are. A business is the opposite: bank details on file, and no interest in putting a B2B invoice on a card. A contractor in a country whose currency loses value by the month would rather hold USDC than wait on a local-currency deposit.
Magellan does not pick for you, but we can certainly automate or cascade the options based on the business's needs.
What it means for finance teams
Eliminate the crystal ball.
When payouts settle in seconds and go out on demand, the pre-funding stops. You move money the moment you need it to land, not three days early as insurance. The float you used to scatter across a dozen markets comes home, into a balance you can actually see and use.
A cash position stops being an estimate and becomes a fact. Capital that was stranded in transit, or parked in just-in-case buffers, is freed.
The crystal ball was always the expensive part. Without it, idle money stops being idle. Put it to work. Put it into growth. You're in control.
What it means for payments teams
The payments team feels the same shift from a different seat.
Pay into many markets without a single provider and you become a systems integrator by accident. A separate connection to every domestic rail. Each with its own file format, its own cut-off times, its own ways of failing, its own reconciliation. The work grows with the map, not with the volume. Add a market, inherit a maintenance project.
One integration ends that. When a rail goes down, the payment reroutes itself to the next-fastest option, by card or by crypto, instead of becoming a support ticket. Funding turns into a choice rather than a default: pre-fund where volume is heavy and you want instant execution, or fund each payment just in time where you would rather not park the cash. And because the rail is real time, the status is real too. Nobody has to wonder whether Friday's payment lands before Monday.
The simplicity is yours. The complexity is ours.
